Titel: Well, why can't auslanders complain?  BeitragVerfasst am: 12.07.2005, 03:34 Uhr

Beiträge: 2

Hi, someone posted earlier that he didn't understand why people move to a country and then complain about it. . .

Well, why not complain, especially if there is something wrong? In America, plenty of Austrians I know complain about Bush, and have demonstrated against our wars.

And, friend, I totally respected them because in America we protect free speech and value it. . .

Frankly, I was not happy with how one particular Austrian girl who was visiting me and my wife at the time, blamed America for 9/11, but I always respected her right to feel that way, and never told her to go back home.

Let's face it, America and Austria are not perfect. If it takes people who are not from here to help open your eyes and mine to things we'd rather not see, where's the harm, especially if it does us a lot of good in the end?

I think, everyone has the right to complain and critique is very important.
And I think that many of the people who visit this website are thinking in a very critical way about Austria and austrian politics.
But I do think that it causes problems if someone complains about "the Austrians" or "the US-Americans".
For example: I am very unhappy with the austrian government and I do complain about many important politicals decisions made by this government.
But when I went to France and people there told me: "You Austrians you are xenophobic and neo- nazis." I felt very unconfortable with this. At the same time I thought that many people in Austia might be xenophobic but when someone was telling me, "the Austrians" were xenophobic I did't agree. I didn't agree and I don't agree, because even if there might be many xenophobic people in Austria, there also are many people who are not xenophobic at all.

Especially when someone who doesn't belong to a group want's to critizise this group it is helpful, when he or she gives this critique in more differentiated way. In explainig more precisely what he or she means the members of the group can better take the critique.
And in the end this critique has better chances to change something in the minds of people.

So I really hope, that every one feels free to say, what they see, the many things that should go in a different way. But I also hope, that we stop to interact in such a way. We shouldn't offend each other but try to discuss in a fair and productive way.

I agree with you that there is a difference between complaining about legitimate problems and demonizing people because of their nationality. . .

Personally, I don't like the 'love it or leave it' attitude many Americans have about America, and that many Austrians seem to have about Austria. . .

Maybe, just maybe, auslanders who complain about our respective countries actually ? care ?
